Claude de Nicolay crafts some of our favorite terroir-driven Burgundies from the vineyards in and around the hill of Corton. Île des Vergelesses is a wonderfully situated premier cru vineyard in the middle of the slope, facing the hill of Corton to the south east. Cold spring weather combined with hail contributed to a loss of around 50% of their yield for the 2017 vintage, but the reduction in yield combined with consistently cool nights fostered wines with depth and lifted acidity. The wine is lush and open with delicate white flowers and ripe golden apple on the nose. It has a rich texture balanced against zesty acidity giving a mouthwatering presence on the palate. We found it utterly compelling when we tasted the wine recently and savored it over a few hours as it opened-up. It calls for richer foods and can easily be counted as one of the best premier crus whites in the area. Fermented in cement and raised in neutral barrels with minimal new wood. Certified Biodynamic since 2005.
The 2017 Pernand-Vereglesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru Blanc has a beautiful, comely bouquet, scents of freshly sliced white peach intermingling with pineapple chunks and a hint of apricot. The poised, harmonious palate is very well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity and a waxy, almost white-Rhône-like finish that lingers. Excellent.
