This was previously called his Barolo normale, which the family has been making since 1880! Starting with the 2017 harvest, it is called Barolo del Comune di Verduno as all the fruit comes from 4 ha of Verduno crus and aged 3 years in large Slavonian oak botti. Verduno is the Northernmost village in the Barolo area – it’s heavily influenced by the cool evening breezes coming off the nearby Tenaro River. The Alessandria family are to Verduno as the Mondavi’s are to Napa: founding, principal figures of the region. Fabio Alessandria of G.B. Burlotto is more famous than brothers Gian Battista and Alessandro, and Alessandro’s son, Vittore who are the stewards of the generations old, Fratelli Alessandria estate. But, for those in the know, Fratelli Alessandria is the insider, much better value these days. It is yet another Piedmont producer that makes remarkable, world-class wines that sell at extremely fair prices and seem to fly under the radar. I can’t imagine ever having enough wine like this in the cellar.
