Just down the road from Jacques Puffeney, Raphael Fumey and Adeline Chatelain’s estate began in 1999 with the purchase of a small house and stables from the Château de Chavanes, where Raphael’s family had previously farmed grapes to sell to négociants. It would never have happened were it not for the frost of 1991, which annihilated 90% of their vineyards; Raphael and Adeline were forced to vinify the tiny remainder themselves. As they were delighted with the results, in 1999 they were ready to begin independently bottling. Wink Lorch, beloved Jura and Savoie expert, describes Raphael’s personality as quite shy, which may help explain his gentle, hands-off approach to winemaking. His Poulsard is ‘particularly juicy’, in her estimation, and we find this 2018 Fumey Chatelain Arbois Ploussard ‘Grappes Entières de Fertans’ – that is to say, 80% whole cluster fermented Poulsard from the Fertans lieu-dit – to be an ethereal wine, that has that magical spicy quality without weight. Think pomegranate and blood orange. 70-year-old vines help lend a gravitas to this wine, sure to impress any Jura aficionado.
