Chionetti began in 1912, when Giuseppe Chionetti purchased the San Luigi farmhouse in Dogliani, an area heralded as the noblest possible terroir for Dolcetto.
It wasn’t until Giuseppe's grandson Quinto and Quinto’s son Andrea took over the domain that they began estate bottling and selling their wines in foreign markets. Soon after they received critical acclaim for their Dolcetto.
In 2015, they purchased three vineyards in the Barolo area. Today Chionetti owns 15 hectares of vineyards, all farmed and certified organically. Winemaking here is traditional: after a manual harvest and gentle press, fermentation of their Barolo is in barrel, with only spontaneous yeast and a 20-30 maceration on the skins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine ages in wood for anywhere from 11 months to 3 years. Chionetti releases only 85,000 bottles annually.
The 2019 Chionetti Barolo are marked by a delicacy and elegance. The Pianpolvere hails from vines planted in 1965 in Monforte d’Alba; previously, Pianpolvere was its own cru. Now, it has been subsumed by Bussia—it is regarded as a subsection of the sprawling (yet noble) Bussia vineyard site. The vineyard is a unique former seabed of blue-gray marl interlaced with sands, with fossilized shells visible in the soils. Only 1900 bottles made.
