Luis Rodriguez is one of the most dogged winemakers in Galicia, striving to not only save the region’s local grape varieties from obscurity or extinction but also to showcase their immense potential. His home is located in the village of Arnoia, within the Ribeiro appellation, and since 1988 he has accumulated 6 hectares of vineyards planted to local grape varieties like Treixadura, Caiño, and Ferrol in place of the more ubiquitous Palomino and Garnacha Tintorera. Through careful farming, native fermentations, and patient elevage, Luis crafts some of the most captivating wines in all of Spain. While he is perhaps most known for his white wines based on the Treixadura grape, his reds deserve just as much praise. His Vina de Martin Escolma blanco is his top cuvée and one of the most compelling Spanish whites we have come across. Escolma means “selection” in Gallego and represent a selection of the oldest vines in the best parcels on his estate. The blend is primarily Treixadura filled out with Albarino, Torrontes, and Lado that is fermented and aged in French oak for 1 year. Textured and almost lavish while still maintaining beautiful tension over crystalline acidity. A beautiful wine by any measure.
