San Fereolo is a small biodynamic estate in Dogliani, the DOCG just south of Barolo. Nicoletta Bocca acquired the property and founded the estate in 1992 and has since made some of the most cherished, delicious northern Italian reds. She was an early pioneer of biodynamic farming in Italy and studied under the great Bartolo Mascarello. “Il Provinciale” is made like other great traditional Barolo, with long macerations and 2 years aging in big botti. The grapes are sourced from two vineyards, one in Dogliani and one in Barolo proper. Firm tannins and an earthy character give this wine a serious feel, but there’s plenty of succulent fruit to keep things lively. This is a complex and contemplative wine that drinks far beyond its modest price tag. You can enjoy this wine now with food (decanting is beneficial) and it will also continue to improve over the next decade as the tannins soften and integrate. The freshness and balance of the fruit combined with the structured nature of this wine is exactly what we look for in a young Nebbiolo.
