Winemaker Carmelo Pena Santana worked in Chile, Portugal’s Douro, and Ribeira Sacra in Spain before deciding to return to his native Gran Canaria in order to resurrect every fallow, noble, forgotten vineyard site he could find. As is the case with Envinate, Carmelo is seeking to work as naturally as possible, farming organically and biodynamically, and actively minimizing sulfur addition. Carmelo works with antique vines at particularly high altitudes, often working 1200m or higher. The wines arrive to us in painstakingly tiny quantities, and are some of the most exciting new wines we know of.
From a vineyard of 90+ yr vines. Listan Negro whole-cluster fermented in open-top barrel, with no added sulfur. Hands down the favorite of our tasting! We bought all we could, but there’s just not much made.
