Carema is one of the tiniest wine producing regions in all of Italy. This new Carema producer, Chiussuma, was founded in 2016, and named after the waterfall adjacent to these insanely steep vines. They’re a boutique production, eking out a mere 1200 bottles annually. The cold, mountainous slopes of Carema render a lithe wine that charms you with a cherry bouquet proper to any Nebbiolo. Decanting can’t hurt, but the tannins are discrete. With some air, the nose explodes into detail: flowers, sage, pine. This is a poised, pretty red that has a mountain seriousness, but is easy to drink. Same grape as Barolo and Barbaresco, but from the foothills of the Alps to their north.
