There’s a soft spot in my heart for the wines of the Val d’Aoste, that Alpine juncture between the Lyon, the French Riviera, Italy, and Switzerland where castles punctuate every last hillside and turquoise streams flow through old, glacial valleys whenever enough rainwater accumulates. Piantagrossa is based in Donnas, and this wine ‘Dessus’ (French for ‘above’) is an homage to the great work of winemakers and to the efforts necessary to reach the pergolas on terraces which are high and steep. Heroic winemaking, to be sure. This is pure Nebbiolo, known locally as Picotendro, aged 12 months in French oak. The quality of the tannins here suggests this wine could age, and potentially show best after some years of aging. Honestly, though, Val d’Aoste’s reds are never nearly as tannic and foreboding as say, Serralunga—so the wine should show well regardless of when you choose to open.
