In an appellation like Chinon, it takes quite a winemaker to rise above the rest. We’ve no reservation placing Bernard Baudry as one of the finest.
What’s even more impressive is how much Baudry has accomplished in such a short time. Critics can’t get enough, and neither can we! Baudry is a relatively new domaine. After studying viticulture in Beaune, he purchased two hectares in Chinon in 1975, and he made his mark by producing some of the most precise and delicious Cabernet Franc in the Loire. These days, his talented son Matthieu has taken over, but Bernard is still intimately involved.
Many believe this wine deserves to be a Grand Cru; it’s widely recognized as Baudry’s finest. The texture and refinement are unreal. The red grapes from this vineyard come from 15-40 year old vines planted on soils with a thin layer of clay over a bed of especially chalky, micaceous limestone. The wine ages for two years in older barrels and is bottled unfiltered. What is so striking is its effortless combination of pure fruit with lovely detail and seamless, perfectly judged structure. This is the essence of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc at its finest: a compelling, classy and particularly ageworthy beauty of a wine. Baudry recommends aging 2-20 years.
