High up on the steep slopes of the Baffo Pizzamëa-Trigioeu sub-zone lies Gian Piero Ioli’s meager 1 hectare of Nebbiolo vines. His farming is beyond organic, intervening as little as possible and incorporating regenerative techniques that take biodynamic and sustainable farming up several notches. His state-of-the-art cellar looks like something out of Star Wars; the wine is aged in specially designed Clayvers (an Italian brand of ceramic barrels). All bottling is done individually, by hand. This is heroic, minimal-intervention winemaking at its finest. The result is a wine that is as wild and expressive as its terroir. A far-cry from Barolo, this remarkable alpine Nebbiolo is lighter in color but not in intensity nor complexity – more perfumed, ethereal, and ever-evolving in the glass with classic notes of rose, strawberry, cherries, and Valtellina’s alpine herbs. A unique, pure example of what happens when nature is allowed to do its thing. In our view, his winemaking is more than extreme…it’s intergalactic!
