We’ve fallen hard for this Santenay property this year. The Jessiaume estate dates back to 1850, but was purchased in 2020 by a French medical researcher obsessed with Burgundy who was ready to invest in improving every aspect of the estate to make even more elegant and characterful wine.
Domaine Jessiaume owns more of Santenay 1er cru Gravières than any other estate. Santenay 1er cru Gravières is on the northern Chassagne side of Santenay. The Gravières vineyard owes its name to a pileup of alluvial stones, pebbles, and limestone sands strewn across it, brought over by the nearby combe of St. Aubin (think of a combe as a short valley).
These are remarkable finds and offer tremendous pleasure already. You can drink them now or over the coming decade. One of the most full-fruited, fleshiest, and immediately joyous 2021 red Burgundies we’ve encountered—do not miss! It’s every bit as glorious on day two while tasting from only a half a bottle left, so it’s clearly set to improve in the cellar.
