Fitapreta is Antonio Macanita’s Portuguese mainland project based in southern Alentejo. ‘Chao des Eremitas’ refers to ‘the flatlands tended by the St. Paul monastery’. Wine has been crafted from these soils since at least the 8th century! This is a beguiling, lighter-bodied red wine with a unique, slightly herbaceous red fruit and pomegranate nose, that lights on the palate with a pleasing tart grip and then builds to an almost balsamic red-fruited grip. The wine shows outrageous focus and restraint for such a sun-drenched part of Portugal. This wine is made from an antique variety called Tinta Carvalha, and Antonio Macanita is the only one to craft wine from it. These Tinta Carvalha vines are over 50 years old and planted at 850 ft above sea level. This is another rare example of dry-farmed wines in a dry region that sees irrigation elsewhere. Dry-farming nearly always results in finer, more soil-driven wines of character whenever it is possible to practice.
