Millot’s Passetoutgrain is made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Gamay from a single, co-planted, Flagey-Echézeaux plot just south of the road from Clos de Vougeot. These are clay over limestone soils, and the average age of the vines is more than 70 years old. These old vines are meticulously farmed, and the resulting wine is flat out astounding, especially given the modest price tag. This is a perfect wine to pop in an ice bucket in the summer to chill it down a bit, but the wine will be just as welcome in fall and winter, when the dark cherry fruit signature and earthiness will prove welcome complements to the crisp air. This is not your typical Burgundy in that it is a blend of Pinot Noir with Gamay, but it’s a very traditional style of winemaking that is sadly being lost as prices for top Burgundy have folks pulling their gamay and planting more Pinot Noir. There’s only so much you can charge for Passtetoutgrains so this wine stands as firm testament that it deserves a rightful place in the Burgundy landscape.
