Sylvain is the son of Jean-Marc Morey. Neal Rosenthal imported the father’s wines for decades and continues to do so now with Sylvain at the helm. As an aside, Sylvain’s sister Caroline married Pierre Yves Colin (Marc Colin’s son), and that is why that Domaine is called Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. Sylvain’s family has some impressive vineyard holdings, and he is doing a remarkable job with them. We opened his Chassagne rouge at a recent tasting, and I was floored by this little wine. I am a big believer in Chassagne rouge. This however is his most famous red and comes from arguably the best site for Pinot noir in all of Santenay – the famed Grand Clos Rousseau. This is remarkable stuff and unfortunately, we only get a few bottles per year.
