Bodegas Frontonio is the personal project of Fernando Mora MW. Located in the Valdejalon IGP of Aragon in northeast Spain, somewhat sandwiched between La Rioja and Cataluyna, Fernando farms old vines at very high altitudes. Fernando and Frontonio are part of the newest generation of winemakers, including the likes of Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia at Comando G, who are showing the world what Garnacha is capable of. We recently tasted and fell in love with Fernando's Supersonico cuvee. Composed of ~95% organically farmed Garnacha with a small amount of co-planted Macabeo - the vines are 80+ years old at over 3000 ft. elevation on sandy, slate soils. The vines are bush-trained, as is the tradition in the region. Fernando seeks elegance and purity in much the same way they do at Comando G, proving that Grenache doesn’t have to be this monster truck style of wine, but elegant, gastronomic and satiating. Supersonico shows lovely red fruit, floral and herbaceous notes and a mineral backbone. This wine holds its own against some of the best Grenache out there. This is a versatile, joyous, everyday red at an extremely fair price.
