Pelle is the greatest producer in Menetou-Salon, a French appellation just west of Sancerre. Menetou-Salon shares climate, soil types, and grape varieties with its neighbor, yet it stands in the shadows of Sancerre’s beaming popularity. Lucky for us, because I think this obscurity is why ‘Blanchais’ – as masterful as it is – costs as little as it does.
Blanchais comes from a vineyard dominated by Kimmeridgian marl – the same kind of soil you see in most 1er Cru and Grand Cru Chablis. So instead of just tasting of lime, grapefruit, and herbs – like Sancerres often do – Blanchais also has Chablisienne notes of lemon curd and oyster liquor. There’s age-worthy substance and a nice, round, polished texture. With air, the minerality becomes crystal clear and wonderfully assertive. This is almost certainly Menetou-Salon’s greatest wine.
Old-vine Sauvignon Blanc from a parcel on soils composed of Kimmeridgian marl (80%) and silex/flint (20%). Vinified and aged in a combination of large, used oak barrels and stainless steel.
