The Occhipinti family has a hand here as well! Eduardo Torres Acosta is a winemaker from Tenerife who interned with Arianna Occhipinti. As a native of volcanic Tenerife, Sicily’s Mt. Etna was a natural fit for him: ‘Volcanic soils are like a family for me’. After gradually winning over locals who couldn’t deny his hard work and talent, he managed to find old vineyards to rent in this red-hot region of the wine world—not an easy task! His first vintages were made in Arianna’s cellar, forcing him to bottle the wines as IGT Siciliane as he was in Vittoria. Fast forward to today, and he’s on his feet making wines that are winning fans in his own new facility. He still prefers to bottle under the IGT Siciliane appellation, even if these are pure Etna through and through. Versante Nord is a blend of six different Mt. Etna vineyard sites, all farmed organically and planted to old vine Nerello Mascalese, fermented nearly entirely in concrete with 20% whole cluster. This is a spicy and lively wine with an excellent balance between freshness and structure, and a beautiful introduction to Eduardo’s style. Easy to like! A domaine to watch. -Jonny Lips
