A great example of an elegant domestic Pinot Noir. Winemaker Mikey Giugni was on a mission to find a place to produce distinctive, minimal intervention, terroir-driven wines from sites which have marine-influenced climates and soils. In Giugni’s opinion, there could be no fine wines without that critical coastal influence. Scar of the Sea was born, and the Central Coast of California was where he decided to make his mark. This Pinot Noir comes from famed vineyards in Santa Maria Valley: Bien Nacido, Solomon Hills, Sierra Madre, and Los Alamos. Harvested in 5 picks with a combination of whole cluster and whole berry fermentation, native ferment, and aged in neutral oak for 8 months. Unfiltered, with the only addition being a touch of SO2. The Solomon Hills and Bien Nacido Vineyards are owned by the Miller Family and farmed by Chris Hammell using organic farming practices. Solomon Hills is on the far western edge of the Santa Maria Valley, on the Solomon Hill sand dunes. Bien Nacido was planted in 1973 on its own roots. Over the last 40 years, the vineyard has expanded through additional plantings. It sits on the northeastern edge of the valley, on the hillsides of the San Rafael Mountain Range.
