Alexandre Filaine is the Champagne house of Fabrice Gass. After performing duties as cellarmaster for Bollinger for 25 years, he packed up some of Bollinger’s old barrels, as he claims, “the older the barrel the better,” and was able to produce more wine for himself. Still miniscule in production, he owns just over 2 hectares in Damery, planted largely to Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with about 20% of his vineyards planted to Chardonnay. His vineyards are wonderfully alive, with herbs and vegetables amongst the vines, and under the fertile soils are silex and chalkier soils. All of his wines are truly hand-made, and never, ever go through malolactic, as the grapes’ naturally high acidity prevents the conversion. His Champagnes are defined by tension, drive, and energy and provide so much pleasure in every sip. The wines are a treat to open in their youth, but we’d challenge anyone who thinks NV Champagne can’t improve with age to lay these down for a few years. A hidden treasure of a Champagne!
