Join us as we explore the breathtaking volcanic terroir of the Canary Islands through the lens of native winemaker Carmelo Pena. After traveling the globe and honing his craft alongside Portuguese wine luminary Dirk Niepoort, Carmelo returned to his home island of Gran Canaria to launch his acclaimed project, Bien de Altura. Working with ancient, own-rooted vines—many over a century old and completely untouched by phylloxera—Carmelo is putting Gran Canaria’s viticulture on the map. Grown at staggering altitudes on steep, volcanic slopes of sand, silt, and clay, his vines thrive in a unique, low-rainfall microclimate where desert meets the Atlantic, resulting in some of the most dynamic and expressive wines in the archipelago.
In this class, we’ll dive into Carmelo’s wines that champion the elegant, fresh fruit profile of the indigenous Listán Negro grape along with Tintilla, Listán Prieto (País) and Vijariego. Through meticulous, minimal-intervention winemaking—utilizing untouched whole-bunch co-fermentations and aging in old French oak—Carmelo crafts wines of incredible purity, structure, and charm.
We will taste through his highly sought-after lineup, from the beautifully balanced Ikewen parcel blend, to distinctive single-vineyard like the tantalizingly floral Tidao, the savory and structured Agan, and his ideal expression, Sansofi.
