Hello {{ first_name|default:"there" }}!

A few months back I wrote to you about Il Guercio, the wine Sean O’Callaghan makes at the very top of his range from a single terraced vineyard at 650 meters. Today I want to talk about the wine that represents the core of his production — the bottle I regularly keep on hand. Because as much as I admire Il Guercio, this is the Carleone that I reach for when I am hosting friends who are less wine nerdy, preparing a big bowl of pasta or firing up the grill.

The 2023 Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese from the hills of Radda, grown on a mix of Alberese limestone and Galestro. That is the entire story. No Merlot rounding out the edges, no oak, and no attempt to make Sangiovese taste like something it isn’t. Given Sean’s history of bottling outside the DOCG when rules conflicted with his vision, his decision to label this Chianti Classico speaks volumes—it shows he embraces the appellation only when it serves the quality of the wine.

What lands in the glass is bright red cherry and wild strawberry, a lift of dried herbs, and a mineral edge that runs straight through the middle. The 2023 growing season let the fruit ripen slowly and kept the acidity intact, so the tannins are firm but fine-grained. It is a serious wine that never once asks you to take it seriously.

Chianti is a versatile, year-round red, but it truly shines with a slight chill. Pop this in the fridge for twenty minutes to reach cellar temperature (around 55 degrees), and it becomes the most useful wine in your collection. The acidity brightens, the fruit snaps into focus, and it cuts beautifully through everything coming off the grill, from sausages and chicken thighs to charred zucchini and burgers. It is equally perfect for peak tomato season; a simple Caprese or a plate of ripe tomatoes with olive oil and salt makes for a quintessential August pairing.
