Comando G: Garnacha at its Best with The Ethereal 2023 Crus and 2024 Village Wines
Comando G has become the leading light of the "New Spain" wine movement, a move towards elegance, refined tannin, and long-forgotten, rugged and even overlooked vineyards. Founded by Fernando García and Daniel Landi, their fragrant and weightless Garnacha is now earning them the famous title of the "Burgundy of Spain." Located in the rugged Sierra de Gredos mountains west of Madrid, the duo has spent years reclaiming forgotten, high-altitude plots of ancient Garnacha vines. Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes elegance, transparency and ethereal textures, drawing frequent comparisons to legendary producers like Château Rayas and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The soul of these wines lies in their remote, wind-swept vineyards. Rooted on high-altitude, granitic slopes reaching up to 1,200 meters, these sites provide a distinct mineral tension and a floral, citrus-toned profile that has completely redefined what Garnacha can be. The resulting wines are famous for their haunting, Barolo- and Burgundy-like aromatics.

The 2023s are from a cool vintage marked by soaring aromatics, and Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate was absolutely gushing about them in his most recent reviews. Please note that Comando G's "1er Cru" and "Grand Cru" equivalent wines are now being released a year after the village wines, giving them a bit more time to gracefully evolve before release.

I have included brief descriptions below, along with some notes on the individual parcels. If you are interested in adding any of these beautiful wines to your cellar, wine fridge or home collection, please use the links below or email me at shop@mcwine.com

COMANDO G
2024 Vinos de Madrid, La Bruja De Rozas - 5 btls @ $46.99/btl
The "village" wine of Rozas de Puerto Real; a vibrant and aromatic Garnacha featuring notes of wild strawberry, cracked pepper and mountain herbs with a refreshing, granite-driven mineral finish.

2024 Vinos de Madrid, Navatalgordo - 6 btls @ $79.99/btl
Also considered a village wine, Navatalgordo is sourced from high-altitude, quartz-heavy soils; it is a more structured, stonier expression with firm tannins, drinking similarly to a red from northern Italy.

2023 Vinos de Madrid, Pena La Mora 1er - 6 btls @ $165/btl
A "1er Cru" single-parcel wine from a 1,200-meter north-facing site. Interestingly, this wine is sourced from the exact same Navatalgordo lieu-dit as their legendary El Tamboril cuvée. It offers a sophisticated profile of red cherries and rosehips with a long, spicy and persistent finish.

2023 Vinos de Madrid, Las Umbrias - 11 btls @ $299.99/btl
One of the most ethereal and delicate "Grand Cru" sites, grown on granitic sand with patches of clay, it is pale in color but intensely aromatic, showing notes of dried flowers, white pepper and a silky, weightless texture.

2023 Castilla y LeonEl Tamboril Tinto - 6 btls @ $299.99/btl
From 70-year-old vines on north-facing granitic slopes, El Tamboril is the highest and coldest vineyard Comando G works. Because of this extreme elevation, harvest is typically pushed incredibly late into the fall. This wine is more structured and vertical than its peers, with racy dark fruit, menthol hints and a profile often compared to a Barolo. Only 1,779 bottles were filled in April of 2025.

2023 Castilla y Leon, Las Iruelas El Tiemblo - 6 btls @ $315/btl
Unique for its slate and schist soils, a fragile yet energetic wine with a savory edge of pine needles and wild strawberry, supported by incredibly fine, chalky tannins. 70-75-year-old vines 1000m above sea level.

2023 Castilla y Leon, La Tumba del Rey Moro  - 5 btl @ $365.00/btl
Sourced from 60- to 70-year-old vines, this incredibly steep and rugged vineyard was famously difficult for the team to reclaim from mountain scrub. This Garnacha consistently earns perfect scores for its precision, intense floral aromatics and silky, cashmere-like palate. In fact, this specific vintage was awarded a perfect 100 points by the Wine Advocate.

I have to give an honorable mention to the 2022 Granito del Cadalso Garnacha. This wine actually started as a rescue project in the Sierra de Gredos. A local cooperative was losing their vines, many well over 70 years old, to suburban developers. To save the region's vineyards, the locals teamed up with Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, the winemakers behind Comando G. The work they have done here is incredible. This is a beautiful Garnacha grown on pure granite sand and aged only in concrete to highlight the bright, pure fruit. It drinks way above its price point, and every bottle sold helps the local farmers keep these old vines in the dirt where they belong.
