Savvy Burgundy collectors know the smartest buys in the Côte de Nuits happen when exceptional terroir hides behind a humble label. On paper, this is a regional bottling. In reality, this wine's terroir places it in an entirely different league.

Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot is a historic family estate with six of Burgundy's greatest Grand Crus, including Grands-Échezeaux and Clos de la Roche. For decades, they sold their harvest off to top Beaune négociants, but the estate has recently become a sought-after name in the Côte de Nuits.

What makes their 2023 Bourgogne Rouge worth the investment is where it is grown. The grapes used for this wine are born of vines planted in the 1950s and 1960s in Flagey-Échezeaux. Situated on the lower slopes directly below the village and bordering Vosne-Romanée, this is terroir and vine age that comfortably rival many producers' village-level wines.

In the cellar, winemaker Thomas Colladot works with the same obsessive precision as his childhood friend and tasting partner, Sébastien Cathiard. Through destemming and gentle extraction, Thomas coaxes an effortless purity from this old-vine fruit: perfumed wild raspberry, subtle forest spice, and wonderfully soft, rounded tannins.

While the domaine's Grand Crus demand a decade of cellaring, this wine delivers immediate, irresistible pleasure over the next five years. As Jasper Morris MW noted:
