Hello Friends,

Sylvain Morey farms 14 tiny parcels totaling 3.96 hectares across Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, and Santenay. He comes from one of Chassagne’s historic winegrowing families: the Moreys have cultivated vines here for centuries. In 1996, Sylvain left Burgundy for the Luberon, where he later founded La Bastide du Claux. When his father, Jean-Marc, retired in 2014 and divided the family vineyards between Sylvain and his sister Caroline, Sylvain returned to Chassagne and established his own Burgundy domaine, bringing nearly 20 vintages of experience from the South.

I am thrilled to offer this small, precisely made collection of wines. The whites are vinified with spontaneous fermentations, generally in 350-liter barrels, restrained new oak, little to no bâtonnage, and extended élevage—often around 18 months for the principal Chardonnay cuvées. This is a restrained approach intended to preserve site transparency, texture, and mineral detail across Morey’s exceptional holdings in Chassagne and Saint-Aubin.

Do not overlook the reds. Morey’s tiny, old-vine Pinot holdings are central to this offer, and his cellar work is calibrated to preserve the balance each site provides. Partial whole-cluster fermentation can bring aromatic lift and savory complexity; long macerations and gentle pump-overs build structure while avoiding overly forceful extraction; and 18 months in larger-format demi-muids gives the wines time to settle while keeping oak influence in proportion. The old-vine material and measured extraction suggest wines with the structure to reward time in the cellar.

More importantly, these are not anonymous négociant bottlings. Each red comes from a remarkably small, clearly defined holding: a blend of three old-vine Chassagne parcels; the last remaining Pinot parcel in Champs-Gains; and a complete inherited holding in Santenay’s 1er Cru Grand Clos Rousseau. Rare sites and old-vine material are only the beginning; it is Morey’s sure-handed work in the vineyard and restraint in the cellar that allows each parcel to speak so clearly. These are “insider” wines I can’t recommend highly enough!

White Wines

A blend centered on a half-hectare holding in La Bergerie, planted between 1958 and 1974, with smaller parcels in nearby Les Perclos and the village-classified portion of Les Pierres, both planted in the mid-1990s. The appeal here is the combination of mature-vine material and a layered set of village sites, all within Chassagne-Montrachet. Only 60 cases were allocated to the U.S.

From vines planted in 1990 in east-facing Les Charmois, a premier cru with an unusually Chassagne-like position in Saint-Aubin: it sits along the continuation of Chassagne-Montrachet’s principal slope and beside 1er Cru Les Chaumées. For buyers who value the tension and site specificity of Saint-Aubin but want a clear connection to Chassagne’s celebrated terroir, this is an especially interesting bottle. The producer describes Les Charmois as “the most Chassagnais” of Saint-Aubin’s premiers crus.

Sylvain works 0.38 hectares of very old selection-massale Chardonnay in En Caillerets, planted by his grandfather Albert in 1950. The site lies on the slopes above and south of the village and is among Chassagne’s most prized white-wine climats. This is a serious collector’s allocation: a tiny family parcel in a benchmark premier cru, aged for 18 months in demi-muids and bottled unfiltered. Only 20–25 cases were allocated to the U.S. The domaine characterizes En Caillerets as “racy and timeless.”

From a 0.39-hectare Chardonnay parcel in the renowned Champs-Gains premier cru, planted in 1952. This is an exceptionally small holding in one of Chassagne’s reference sites, and its value lies in the combination of old vines, a high-class climat, and Morey’s restrained, extended élevage. Just 25 cases were allocated to the U.S.

Red Wines

Drawn from 0.95 hectares of selection-massale Pinot planted between 1956 and 1974 in La Bressonne, Les Lombardes, and Les Chambres. Rather than relying on a single parcel, this bottling brings together three complementary sources: mature-vine material from La Bressonne, the depth of the clay-rich Lombardes parcel, and the more lifted influence of the slightly sandier lower rows in Chambres. It is a remarkably detailed village-level sourcing story, particularly at this price, and a persuasive reminder that Chassagne Rouge deserves attention in the right hands.

Morey farms the last surviving Pinot Noir parcel in Champs-Gains, just 0.16 hectares planted by his grandfather Albert in the early 1950s. In a premier cru now overwhelmingly associated with Chardonnay, this is a rare chance to secure red Pinot from the site—and from genuinely old family vines. The scarcity alone would be notable; paired with Morey’s measured extraction and extended élevage, it is one of the most distinctive wines in the offer.

Grand Clos Rousseau is Morey’s complete 0.40-hectare holding in Santenay, inherited from his father and planted in 1993. Jean-Marc Morey long considered it the standout red in his cellar, and Sylvain was especially excited to take over the full parcel. For buyers seeking a serious, site-specific premier-cru Pinot outside the increasingly expensive Chassagne and Volnay conversation, this is an unusually compelling allocation. Approximately 30 cases came to the U.S.
