Two Icons in Champagne: Krug & Suenen

Two Icons in Champagne: Krug & Suenen
Today, we are highlighting two Champagne houses that sit at opposite ends of the stylistic spectrum, yet share an obsessive commitment to consistency and absolute perfection.

First, Krug.

Simply put, Krug is Krug, and Krug "173ème Édition" represents the absolute zenith of Champagne blending. It is a masterpiece of the art.

Built around the vibrant 2017 harvest, this cuvée is a complex symphony comprising 150 individual wines spanning 13 different vintages, with the oldest components dating back to 2001.

This immense depth, with 31% of the blend composed of mature reserve wines, is what gives Grande Cuvée its signature breadth, roundness, and legendary texture. It is a wine designed to defy time. It offers extraordinary pleasure and profound complexity the moment it is opened, while simultaneously possessing the pedigree to evolve beautifully in your cellar for decades to come. Personally, I always have a bottle of Krug on hand.

Cépage: 44% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, 22% Meunier.

Aurélien Suenen is easily one of our top five favorite Champagne growers at MWC, and the 2019 vintage is shaping up to be one for the history books. We are talking about a generational vintage—the kind that belongs in the same conversation as 2008, 2002, 1996, and 1988. Aurélien didn't just participate in this vintage; he turned out a stellar collection that perfectly coincides with his official organic certification.

Aurélien’s trajectory is one of the most compelling stories in modern Champagne. Since taking over his family estate in 2009, he has undergone a radical transformation, evolving from a traditional producer into a true scholar of the soil. He enlisted the help of "soil royalty" Claude and Lydia Bourguignon (consultants to DRC and Leflaive) to completely revitalize his vineyards.

This obsessive focus on terroir, capped by his 2019 organic certification, has imbued his wines with a vibrating energy that now commands the same respect as the region’s greatest legends.

These 2019 single-vineyard wines from the idiosyncratic former basketball star may very well be the best I have tasted from him to date.

I have included my notes on the wines below.

SUENEN
2019 Champagne, La Grande Vigne Extra Brut, Pinot Meunier - 12 btls @ $299/btl
This comes from a tiny parcel of ungrafted Pinot Meunier vines planted in 1969 on pure sand. Despite the warm vintage, the fruit is incredibly fresh from an early harvest, yet it remains utterly delicious and vibrant, with insane nervy energy. It’s textural and creamy, with notes of baked apple and white flowers, and unwavering length.

2019 Champagne, Oiry, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut, La Cocluette - 12 btls @ $299/btl
Simply put, this is exquisite. Take the classic Suenen Oiry signature—chalky, tense, and mineral—and amplify every aroma and flavor. From vines planted in 1925, this is a concentrated, mouth-filling, and exceptionally complex wine that is a total joy to drink right now, though it will certainly age gracefully for years.

2019 Champagne, Chouilly Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, Le Mont-Aigu - 12 btls @ $325/btl
If Suenen’s other wines are about precision and finesse, "Le Mont-Aigu" is a pure statement of power and textural breadth. Sourced from a singular, south-facing Chouilly site planted back in 1978, this Blanc de Blancs explodes with rich, opulent aromas of lemon confit, peach, and brioche. It is massive on the palate—broad, muscular, and deeply concentrated—yet remains impeccably structured by vibrant acidity.

2019 Champagne, Cramant, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Extra Brut, Les Robarts - 5 btls @ $325/btl
The 2019 "Les Robarts" is nothing short of stunning. While the nose is already highly expressive with notes of white peach, almond, nutmeg, and white flowers, typical of Cramant, the palate remains incredibly youthful. This is a rock-solid wine with impeccable balance that I would recommend cellaring to fully blossom. Although I fully enjoyed the bottle I opened last week.

2019 Champagne, Oiry, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut, Sur les Gros Monts - 12 btls @ $345/btl
I firmly believe this is one of the greatest Champagnes Aurélien has ever made. We are incredibly fortunate to secure a tiny allocation of this ultra-rare, single-barrel (228-liter)  bottling, which is typically reserved for family and private clients. However, in 2019, he produced a single, exceptional barrel (only 300 bottles total). Transatlantic Imports is the only importer in the world receiving this wine.
