Meet & Taste with Winemaker Luc Prieur

Domaine Paul Prieur was established as a family winery in 1889. Since 2012, Luc Prieur has run this historic property and is the 11th generation Prieur to make Sancerre wines. Their estate is in Verdigny, right at the foot of the famed Monts Damnés vineyard.

They farm 13.5 total hectares of Sauvignon Blanc mainly planted on limestone soils in Verdigny (caillottes) and Chavignol (terres blanches – Kimmeridgian marne), but they also have 5 hectares planted in nearby Thauvenay (silex). Luc has made significant investments in the family’s production and is committed to organic viticulture (’22 being the first certified vintage) and low-intervention winemaking – all hand-harvesting, no herbicides, pesticides, nor synthetic fertilizers in the vineyard, no sulfur before fermentation and no filtering, minimal use of new oak, and isolated pied de cuves (fermentation starters) from each of his unique soil types. His progressive farming techniques married with a pragmatic, rather traditional, old school, low-intervention style in the winery produces laudable results. We feel that Luc’s wines compete with the very best of the appellation and offer tremendous value in a very over-priced category. They excel at both blanc and rouge Sancerre and we will be tasting both!

We’re excited to have Luc come talk and pour at our shop on Wednesday March 26th from 5:30-6:30 pm. This is a casual, rolling tasting by our front tasting bar.  Please reach out to shop@mwcwine.com with any questions in the meantime.
