Luigi Ferrando is a towering figure in the history of Italian wine who has become synonymous with the tiny appellation of Carema. His estate has always crafted the sort of soulful, haunting Nebbiolo that seems to cement itself deeper and deeper into our wine consciousness with each passing year. Luigi’s sons, Roberto and Andrea, have admirably carried on Luigi’s legacy and have produced exceptional wine in the 2016 vintage.  

The 2016 vintage in Piedmont is best described as near perfect, with moderate summer temperatures and a long, dry fall that allowed for a leisurely harvest of top-quality fruit. Carema is perched in the foothills of the Alps, in a much cooler micro-climate than Barolo or Barbaresco. Ferrando’s 2016s are simultaneously graceful and exuberant, driven more by acidity and minerality rather than tannins, with boisterous aromatics. We opened 2016 Carema Classico last week and it was a truly thrilling Nebbiolo. Rose, cherry, and rosemary leapt out on the nose while the palate was silky with fine tannins and brilliant tension throughout. As is usually the case, it was quite approachable in its youth, but with nervy tension and depth that will carry this for decades to come in the cellar. We measure great wines by how fast you want to drink them, and Ferrando is one of those wines that always seems to disappear quickly. Ferrando’s alpine Nebbiolo is as compelling as anything coming out of Piedmont, and we feel an essential wine given its high quality and relative value.
