For Nebbiolo lovers, the 2016 vintage of Barbaresco, Vignasparse from Cantina del Glicine is a wine that deserves to be in your collection and on your dinner table. Cantina del Glicine is a small estate founded by Roberto Bruno and Adriana Marzia in the village of Neive in 1980.  Based in a warren of cellars with vaulted brick ceilings built in the 1500’s (which is itself protected as an UNESCO world heritage site), Cantina del Glicine has always produced classically styled Nebbiolo that has quietly amassed a devoted cult following over the years. Vignasparse, scattered vines, is a cuvee drawn from many different vineyards in the region creating a wine that is a complete expression of Barbaresco. Far more than a work horse wine; Vignasparse hits on many levels and is a case and point of why we love 2016 Nebbiolo from the Langhe. Aromatically enticing, fresh and lively on the palate, with the depth and structure to age for many years to come; to capture so many facets of what makes Nebbiolo a noble grape at such a great price is no small feat. Sadly, the 2016 vintage will be the last year wine was produced at Cantina del Glicine after Roberto passed away suddenly in 2017, making this wine even more precious. .

2016 Vignasparse (scattered vines) from Cantina del Glicine is a remarkable bottle of Barbaresco that seamlessly combines depth and structure with freshness and accessibility.   The wine is expressive right out of the gate with a distinctively bold bent for a Barbaresco. Black cherries lead out with loads of pungent spices and rich veins of earth lifted by just a hint of blood orange. The palate is firm and impeccably balanced with a fair amount of fine, ripe tannins up front braced by bright acidity and a distinctly mineral finish. Tasted over the course of a few days, the wine never dropped off, instead opening up into a much more floral expression as the tannins slowly resolved. The 2016 Vignasparse is sure to have a long life ahead of it in the cellar and will comfortably age for 10-20 years or more.  A real triumph for the last vintage of this stalwart estate.
