Kerrie Tornabene's shot from the 2013 harvest at Domaine Tissot

Over the past decade or so, the Jura wine region emerged from relative obscurity to one of the darlings of the wine world, and here in NYC, Jura wines found their way on to the best wine lists and a number of shops stocked and wrote about the wines frequently (MWC included!). Some of our favorite importers brought them in and slowly but surely the wines began to take hold. A small, but extremely passionate consumer fan base developed for this historic and diverse wine region located one hour east of Burgundy.

It was no surprise to us to see the wider wine world take notice, and by the time Guillaume d’Angerville (from the superb, Volnay Domaine, Marquis d’Angerville) purchased the former Jacques Puffeney estate, Jura was resolutely considered a “classic” and fine wine region alongside the other iconic regions of France. We mention Guillaume’s historic purchase not only as a landmark moment in Jura wine history, but also in the context of today’s thrilling Tissot offer. After all, it was a bottle of ’05 Tissot Arbois Chardonnay that Guillaume tasted blind at the two-star Michelin restaurant, Le Taillevent in Paris that inspired him to explore and eventually purchase vineyards in this magical wine region.

Today, we are so excited to offer the landmark ’18 Chardonnay releases from Stéphane Tissot and feel strongly that they are amongst the best we’ve encountered from this extraordinary producer. For the first time in many years, Jura growers were graced not only with generous yields but also impeccable quality fruit with the 2018 vintage. Tissot’s vines on ancient Jurassian and Triassian soils yield wines that balance intensity and drive with loads of character in a way few others can. This is ouillé (non-oxidative) Jura Chardonnay at its finest!

Stéphane Tissot has been the driving force behind Domaine Tissot ever since he returned to the family property in the late 1990’s, rapidly converting to biodynamic farming (now Demeter certified) and improving the work in the cellar. Those that have met him know he is a man of effusive passion and unmatched energy. Over the past 20 years he has developed a reputation as one of the most talented growers and producers in the region with his ever-expanding roster of wines and is truly one of the regions greatest ambassadors. Tissot’s Chardonnay wines go toe to toe with the great Burgundy whites and show how special the Jura can be at a fraction of the price.

We are pumped to offer this extremely rare lineup in both bottles and magnums and encourage you to move quickly if interested. They are hard to resist now but will improve markedly in the cellar over the next 5-10+ years. The wines below are offered on a first come, first served basis. Cheers,

THE WINES

Domaine Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot - Arbois Chardonnay, Bruyéres 2018
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE | 8 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE
$66.00/BOTTLE | $132.00/MAGNUM
Bruyéres is a single, south-facing vineyard in Arbois planted on clay from the Triassic period (before Jurassic).  This wine is rich and expansive on the palate but in perfect equilibrium. Striking, smoky aromatics explode out of the glass along with a rush of guilt that pours over you when you drink this wine!  It’s been a number of years since we’ve been able to offer this remarkable cuvée – run don’t walk here!
Domaine Bénédicte & Stephane Tissot- Arbois Chardonnay, Mailloche 2018
20 BOTTLES AVAILABLE | 2 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE
$75.00/ BOTTLE | $142.00/MAGNUM
Mailloche is an eastern-facing vineyard in Arbois planted on very compacted clay of the Lias period.  There’s concentration and power here to rival Clos de la Tour de Curon in this vintage, and it’s always recommended to taste Mailloche alongside Bruyéres as both planted on clay and both feature that unmistakable Jura nutty (not quite oxidative), spicy, almost doughy nose while still being fresh and citrusy! Wow wine! Decanting is encouraged, and these are the type of wines you could drink half, cork and drink the other half days later…the wine won’t skip a beat and reveal even more complexity without slightest bit of oxidation.  They are truly remarkable and singular.
Domaine BéNédicte & Stéphane Tissot - Arbois Chardonnay, Graviers 2018
22 BOTTLES AVILABLE | 6 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE
$66.00/BOTTLE | $132.00/MAGNUM
From several parcels of Chardonnay grown on rocky, limestone soils. The wine is lively, expressive, and highly mineral, definitely reflective of its rocky origins. There's plenty of citrus character and salivating acidity that will have you quickly reaching for another glass. These plots are more typical of Burgundian soils and the wine acts that way on the palate with a more linear style and extra dose of minerality.
Domaine BéNédicte & Stéphane Tissot - Arbois Chardonnay, Clos de la Tour de Curon 2018

5 BOTTLES AVAILABLE | 3 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE
$162.00/BOTTLE | $332.00/MAGNUM
Clos de la Tour de Curon is essentially Tissot’s tete de cuvee.  It’s a walled vineyard that Stephane planted in 2002 with high density and massale selection, and it makes arguably one of the best Chardonnays in the entire Jura region.  The power and intensity of this wine is every bit what you’d expect from Grand Cru White Burgundy.
Domaine BéNédicte & Stéphane Tissot - Arbois Chardonnay, Saint-Roch 2018
3 MAGNUMS AVAILABLE
$252.00/MAGNUM
This cuvée is sourced from 100+ year old vines planted on a large pile of Jurassic limestone. Floral and beguiling aromatics leap out of the glass followed by a tremendous attack of nervy citrus fruits, intense minerality and lip-smacking acidity. This is the rarest of rare of Tissot Chardonnay cuvées, and it is only ever bottled in magnum (totaling 100-200 magnums, depending on the vintage).  In South Carolina, they roast local oysters under burlap sacks and serve on saltines. We’d like to try that with a magnum of this!  Only problem is that we have 3 magnums available, and we’re not near the warm waters of Charleston, SC! We can dream right!?
