Marino Surveys his lush vineyards at the Podere Sante Marie

Marino and Luisa Colleoni own Podere Sante Marie in Montalcino, the source of some of the most soulful and evocative wines we have come across in the region. They founded their small property in 1989, just outside the town of Montalcino on the crest of a hill overlooking the northern reaches of the appellation. After discovering an abandoned vineyard on the estate, Marino cleared the land and had a small plot registered to produce Brunello. Their soils are composed of hard volcanic marl littered with ancient seashells, and they are extremely well suited for producing elegant and fine Sangiovese, the only grape they grow.

From the first vintage (’00), the Colleonis embraced organic agriculture and set out to farm their land as naturally as possible. Marino is confident that his plot yields top notch fruit without the need for any wizardry or technical gimmicks, relying instead on careful selection and miniscule yields. He is equally hands-off in the winery, preferring whole cluster ferments and long macerations for his wines followed by large, used botti elevage.

Each year Marino's exacting methods result in the production of just a few hundred cases of wine, very few of which ever make it to the states. Today, we are delighted to offer Colleoni's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino, a captivating, natural wine from this stellar vintage.  Sourced from their declassified Brunello plot, his Rosso spends 18 months in Slavonian oak botti of varying sizes. 2016 is the most exciting Tuscan harvest we have encountered with a long, moderate growing season uninterrupted by damaging hail, heat, or rain. Colleoni's wines have few peers in Montalcino where true garagiste producers are few and far between; tasting Marino's wines often makes us think of Giovanni Canonica in Barolo in the way they proudly and so clearly have nothing to hide. Their extreme dedication to their land and culture is awe-inspiring. The comparison certainly is not perfect, but the resemblance is uncanny despite their notable differences. Marino’s wines are delicious, unique, and so special.  We are so excited to offer the 2016 Rosso di Montalcino to you today.  We purchased all that we could, so please grab what you can while supplies last.

Marino Colleoni's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino gives many Brunellos a run for their money. Marino ferments his Rosso whole cluster in open top vats without added yeasts nor temperature control. The wine then spends 18 months aging in large Slavonian oak Botti. There is a whisper of game on the nose but after a few hours decanting a kaleidoscopic rush of pure fruit emerges, lifted by lovely, perfumed floral notes. There is a fine layer of ripe tannins on the palate, but the wine is still accessible and would be well suited to rich foods. As the tannins mellow, this elegant and pure Sangiovese disappears into your palate and out of your glass! It will cellar on the same arc as many Brunello’s, and we can’t wait to enjoy its evolution over the next decade or more. We strongly recomend decanting this wine for at least an hour or two before enjoying - there is just so much to love here if you give it some air.
