Ardmore is one of the perpetually underappreciated distilleries in Scotland, being often overlooked as people veer towards the louder flavors of Islay and Speyside. Ardmore, in general, presents a lovely, pared down peat profile propped up with a honeysuckle sweetness and stone fruit core. All of this is really highlighted by its finishing in Monbazillac wine casks, bringing the honey and apricot way up to the forefront and highlighting peat’s ability to come across like grilled tropical fruit in the right context. At 128.6 proof, theres some wiggle room for a dash of cold water to really let the whiskey shine but, honestly, it drinks quite smoothly for a whiskey with such a high abv.
