Nicoletta Boca of San Fereolo makes wines that seek to astonish, and often succeed in doing so. She farms some of the finest terroirs in Dogliani, a region where Dolcetto thrives and attains its highest expression. After taking over the estate in 1992, Nicoletta converted to biodynamic farming. She actively seeks to impart structure in the fruit of her 40–70-year-old vines to bring out Dolcetto’s best.
As San Fereolo’s importer Rosenthal notes, aged examples of her Dolcetto wines often show a fresh energy alongside a dense vein of fruit often marked by a lively mint, licorice, and a savory mineral aromatic signature that feels proper to Piedmont.
The 2012 San Fereolo ‘1593’ Langhe Rosso is a rare selection of Nicoletta’s finest Dolcetto vines in Dogliani, a top wine made only in exceptional vintages. (‘1593’ refers to the first recorded mention of the Dolcetto grape in Dogliani’s records). This wine ages for 6 years in barrel before being racked into stainless for a final aging phase, only to be released 10 years after harvest. This bottling was a wild success during tastings—shockingly good!
