Luisa and Marino Colleoni purchased a property called le Sante Marie just north of Montalcino in the early 1990s with the goal of settling down in the Tuscan countryside. After discovering an abandoned vineyard on the estate, Marino cleared the land, replanted it in 1998, and had a small plot registered to produce Brunello. From their first 2000 vintage, the Colleonis have farmed organically with as little input as possible. Marino ferments his wines in large barrels with minimal sulfur, without added yeasts or temperature control (next level wizardry)!
Here’s the estate’s calling card. The fruit is sourced from 500m altitude vines in the north of Montalcino, and ages 48 months in old Slavonian oak botti. The Santa Maria is a majestic accomplishment of natural winemaking: rich yet balanced, high-toned yet full of earthy bass notes. A wine you’ll be happy to have discovered ahead of the curve, and that you’ll be delighted to taste through the different phases of its assuredly long life. Particularly in magnum format!
