Luis Rodriguez is one of the most dogged winemakers in Galicia, striving to save the region’s local grape varieties from extinction while showcasing their immense potential. He is based in Arnoia, within the Ribeiro appellation, and since 1988 he has accumulated 6 hectares of vineyards planted to local grape varieties like Treixadura, Caiño, and Ferrol (in place of the more ubiquitous Palomino and Garnacha Tintorera). Through careful farming, native fermentations, and patient elevage, Luis crafts some of the most captivating wines in all of Spain. 'A Teixa' is a single vineyard on decomposed granite, planted largely to Treixadura with some Godello and Albarino. It is a lush, textured white that maintains great tension and drive that never veers too far into opulence. Aromatically, orchard fruit pops out with subtle hints of hay and white flowers while the palate is inflected with a saline quality leading to a very fresh finish. Simply gorgeous! A Teixa is fermented in a 23 hectoliter foudre and ages for 1 year in the same barrel. Decanting is highly recommended, as it’s nearly always the last glass of this wine that shows best!
