St. Aubin is an extremely well positioned village sitting just West and over the hill from Chassagne-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. In fact, the best vineyards in St. Aubin (1er Cru En Remilly and 1er Cru Murgers de Dents Chien) are right above the Grand Cru Montrachet vineyard. We used to think of St. Aubin as lesser terroir to that of Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet, but a few producers (namely Olivier Lamy at Hubert Lamy and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey) have had great success in convincing us otherwise, and now there are others who’ve come on strong and made the case that St. Aubin is truly noble terroir. Prudhon is a benchmark St. Aubin producer for us as they are classically styled, extremely site specific and best of all, available at extremely modest prices. This St. Aubin Villages is his most affordable St. Aubin cuvee. For $42, you’re able to buy top Village fruit from great vineyards and a great producer – not something that is possible anymore in Meursault, Chassagne nor Puligny. St. Aubin is a bit of a cheat code when it comes to white Burgundy as it delivers the goods for what is usually quite a bit less than its more famous, neighboring villages.
