The wines at H-G have long represented archetypes of rock-solid, dependably classic Gevrey, where the family have been making wine for more than a century. Philippe Harmand has now fully taken over from his father at the property, and his past few vintages have been revelatory. Changes have been deliberate, though modest during the generational shift. Here Philippe has maintained a similar program in the vines while continuing to fine tune a more gentle process in the cellar. In his view, Gevrey possesses a natural power, so his job is much more focused on finding pure fruit expression and finesse than pushing the wines to a more obvious display of strength.
This wine comes from a group of parcels totaling about 4ha in Gevrey. Vines are up to 80 years old. Old vines have long been the strong suit of this domain; most often, even in non-'Vieilles Vignes' labeled bottlings, the bottles hail from exceptionally old vines that would make other estates green with envy.
