A very exciting and almost Burgundian, elegant gem from an old Sicilian contrada on the north slope of Mt. Etna that’s ideally suited to Nerello Mascalese. High altitude (750m), densely planted terraced sites planted in alberello style (so, no tractor lanes or wires: just old-school, head-trained vines that require so much additional TLC, but render superior wine). Hand-harvested grapes are totally destemmed, and ferment in stainless steel for 3 weeks with indigenous yeasts. The wine then ages in a blend of French tonneaux and stainless steel for a year, and spends an additional 10 months aging in bottle before release. A lovely, spicy, and red-fruited wine that’s an ideal partner to red meats, game, or aged cheeses.
