Alain Coudert of Clos de la Roilette consistently produces beautiful wines each year, and his Fleurie Cuvee Tardive is the sleeper wine of the 2018 vintage in Beaujolais for much of the team here at MWC. His father purchased the estate in the 60’s, patiently reviving the vineyards that had fallen into disrepair on the property rather than replanting the vines. Tucked into the western edge of the village of Fleurie, his soils are composed of manganese rich clay that more closely resembles those found in Moulin-a-Vent. There is palpable density matched by a vivid sense of freshness that serves to highlight the overall intensity of the wine. A lovely swirl of dark berries, black tea, cherry liqueur, sage, and spice notes pop on the nose ceding into rich earth. The wine is quite tight up front with fine tannins and crackling acidity, but we sat with it as it unfurled slowly over a few hours, and then a few days. We kept coming back to the bottle and finding something new, whispers of graphite or muddled peppermint that were not there before, and it showed no sign of dropping off when we sadly found the end of the bottle. This wine will continue to improve in the cellar over the span of the next few decades and is a perfect example of what the best of Beaujolais is capable of.
