Guimaro is one of the few trailblazing estates that has been working in the Ribeira Sacra DO since its inception in 1996. Founded by Pedro Rodriquez and his family, Guimaro has been in constant evolution since, embracing traditional techniques while also reducing yields and converting to organic farming. Camino Real is profound expression of Mencia at an unbeatable price point. Sourced from 40 to 60-year-old vines, the grapes are fermented whole cluster in wood and aged in a mix of barrique, tonneau, and foudre for one year. Dark berry fruit and exotic spices leap out on the nose over a silky palate with lifted acidity and restrained tannins. There is plenty of depth here, with intense flavors in a wonderfully open knit bottle. This would be equally great as a first introduction to Mencia as it would be for Galician die-hards.
